We must never allow governments to restrict the internet or to erode freedom and democracy, especially after 'Sept 11th' and other world events.

Usenet Newsgroups

If you have access to Usenet, there are several newsgroups dedicated to privacy and cryptography issues. The following might be worth a look at;

alt.privacy - Low traffic newsgroup about privacy issues, mainly press releases, but does contain chat.
alt.security.pgp - Alternative newsgroup for discussion on Pretty Good Privacy (PGP)
comp.security.announce - Low traffic newsgroup on security announcements.
comp.security.pgp.announce - Low traffic newsgroup for PGP announcements.
sci.crypt - Quite a technical newsgroup for discussing the mathematics and theory of cryptographic topics. (reasonably high traffic)
uk.politics.censorship - UK based newsgroup discussing censorship in the press and political issues. (very low traffic)

The Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005 - A system of control orders which replaces the Part 4 powers under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001.
Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 - Introduced to provide stronger powers to allow the police to investigate and prevent terrorist activity and other serious crime.
